History

Taboo Records released The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki in 1997 from Honolulu. The project was led by Kit Ebersbach (as Perry Coma) and Lloyd Kandell (as Fluid Floyd), writing new exotica charts for a band that treated Denny, Lyman, and Baxter as working material rather than costume.

Martin Denny plays piano on “Exotica ’97” and “Forever & Ever” — late-career sessions that collectors treat as among his last studio appearances. Percussion and bird calls come from Lopaka Colon, son of Augie Colon from Denny’s Shell Bar group. Mark Ryden painted the cover.

The program mixes instrumentals such as “Hot Like Lava” and “Barbi in Bali” with a few vocal tracks. It sits with Combustible Edison and the Blue Hawaiians in the mid-’90s revival, but the Honolulu cast and Denny guest spots give it a straighter line back to the Hawaiian Village circuit.
