Tiki for the Atomic Age

Nels Truesdell and Bob Kress formed Kava Kon in Detroit in 2004 as an escape hatch: thrift-store exotica, B-movie cues, Jamaican dub, and Detroit electronics in one project. Dionysus Records (Burbank) issued Tiki for the Atomic Age in 2009 on CD and LP.

The album stacks vintage organ tones, tribal percussion, and rumba/bossa pastiche with synths and field-recording texture — Denny vocabulary through different circuitry. Tracks such as “Chinese Surfer” and “Palace of the Tiger Women” later turned up in the Apple TV series Severance, which pulled a new audience toward the catalog.

Late-night hours when vinyl hiss is not the mood are the natural slot. Same island charts, modern production — a bridge between 1950s Liberty LPs and a contemporary playlist.
