Lighting before decor
Warm light does more for a home tiki bar than another mask. Start with strings, a cordless lamp, and a 3000K strip. Hang art after.

Why the room still looks like a kitchen
Overhead 4000K cans flatten rattan, punch the color out of a mug, and make every Amazon mask look like a costume-shop leftover. Mid-century tiki rooms were dim on purpose: table lamps, lanterns, and low strings. You can copy that with four SKUs and no drywall.
Treat lighting as priority 1 in the builder. Decor is what you add when the light is already warm and low. If the budget only has $80 left, spend it on glow, not a third thatch roll.
Three layers that actually work
Hang rattan lantern string lights for background glow: warm, connectable, along a shelf edge, curtain rod, or the lip of a cart. They draw a lower ceiling so the room feels smaller in a good way.
Put a 16-foot warm white LED strip under a cabinet, shelf, or the bar-cart top for task light (Govee or Capetronix in the catalog, both ~3000K). You need to see the jigger. You do not need the whole apartment lit.
Add a cordless bamboo/rattan table lamp at 2700K so guests’ faces are not under the only bulb in the room. Plug-in rattan pendants work if you have a spare outlet and will not kick the cord.
What to skip until the glow is right
Himalayan salt lamps, neon pineapple signs, and statement 40-inch masks. They photograph. They do not fix a bright kitchen. Solar Edison strings belong on a patio; indoors they are just unlit wire.
When you do buy decor, look at it under the new lights before you order a second box. A $35 mask set looks expensive in 2700K and cheap in cool white. That is the whole argument.
- Kill or dim the overheads for the evening.
- Hang one warm string at about 6–7 feet, not across the ceiling like a patio party.
- Add a 3000K strip where you mix.
- Put one cordless lamp at sitting height.
- Then decide if you still want a mask.
