History

Dionysus Records released Play Songs for the... Suburban Savages in 1997, in the same mid-’90s lane as Combustible Edison on Sub Pop and Los Straitjackets on Upstart. The Tiki Tones cut instrumental surf and lounge for home tiki bars and backyard luaus during the early revival years.

Reverb guitar, organ, and mid-tempo beats keep the program host-friendly. Titles such as “Night Of The Tikis,” “Zombie Hut,” and “Kon-Tiki” lean into the room type without asking for a listening-party.

Unlike Dale or the Ventures, this LP was aimed at the domestic Polynesian patio from the start. It sits with other Dionysus-era revival discs when you want ambient play that stays in the furniture, not a surf contest.
